To ensure that you letter is published by Election Day, please send all letters to daily papers(using email or a web form) by November 3 or 4.
Weekly papers will need your letter by October 30 or 31.
Your letter is most likely to be published if it …
- Is direct and to the point - 200 words, at maximum.
- Responds to a specific news article or editorial recently published in the newspaper to which you send your letter. For example,
one letter began with, "In an October 7 editorial ('Bad decision by public TV'), you editorialist argues that…"
- Sticks to a specific issue. For example, a veteran with disabilities might write about the challenges she faces in seeking
healthcare, mentioning Kohl’s 2006 vote for the Troop Redeployment Amendment; a gay couple with children might point to the challenges they face
in everyday life, mentioning both Rae Vogeler's strong support for the A Fair Wisconsin Votes NO campaign and Kohl's vote for the
Defense of Marriage Act.
- Includes specific facts, not unsupported statements. See Sample Points to Make, included below.
- Shows that you wrote it personally (specific anecdotes and opinions accomplish this best). Many newspapers have policies against
printing mass-generated political letters.
